Applicants scarce

A prominent Lyttelton firm which advertised conspicuously in “The Press” recently for a labourer expected a deluge of telephone calls in view of the unemployment situation.

In fact, six calls were received. Two of these were from persons already employed in Christchurch and who desired extra pocket money during holidays. Four others also telephoned Two of those went to Lyttelton and one got the job. So only two applicants appeared in person for one job. It was thought that perhaps the distance of the port from town might have discouraged some potential applicants, but it hardly indicated an unemployment crisis, a spokesman said.
