Hawke Cup cricket

(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. Taranaki’s underrated bowling attack demolished its third challenger of the season, North Canterbury, on the first day of the Hawke Cup cricket match at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, yesterday. With T. O’Byrne this time in the leading role, taking six wickets for 48 runs from 22 overs, Taranaki dismissed North Canterbury for 138 in its first innings. By stumps, Taranaki had scored 61 for the loss of one wicket. Its only wicket, that of the opener, T. Dravitzki, was lost on the final ball of the day, after Dravitzki and his partner, B. Roberts, had scored their runs in about even time.

The match was delayed for nearly two hours while the outskirts of the pitch area dried out after heavy overnight rain. The Taranaki captain, D. Yardley, won the toss and sent the challenger in to bat on a pitch that gave the bowlers some assistance early.
