Brabin XI beaten
Eleven runs off the final over, including a towering six from the bat of R. M. Gearry, enabled the Canterbury B cricket team to gain an exciting six-wicket win with only one ball remaining against the New Zealand Brabin Cup XI at Hagley Park yesterday. This two-day match was the climax to the Brabin Cup week and, considering their strenuous week—made more tiring by the oppressive heat —the Brabin players gave a gallant display. A sound 45 by A. J. Hill helped the Brabin XI reach 164 in its second innings, and this meant Canterbury needed 130 runs in a maximum of 19 overs. P. G. d’Auvergne, with two remarkable catches and five wickets, was Canterbury's main wicket-taker. A cultured innings of 60 by R. W. Fulton, and the aggressiveness of C. K. Baker and Gearry brought Canterbury to its thrilling last-over victory.
