Crossbred up 5 p.c. in Napier sale

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, December 30.

Medium and coarse crossbreds at the Napier wool sale today were 5 per cent dearer, and all other wools rose 2f per cent, compared with the latest Invercargill sale.

The Napier sale, which was postponed because of the uncertainty of overseas exchange transactions, was held in Wellington.

The official report said that the offering of 28,740 bales drawn from Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay, East Coast and Taupo districts included mostly ewe and hogget wools, some second-shear and lambs’ wool, and the usual percentage of oddments. Most of the wools were of good top-making and carpet types, with a fair proportion of short carding and odd lots of spinners and paper felts. Most of the fleece opened quite well and in the rrfain was high yielding, but some tenderness and cottiness was noted. Many lines of offsorts, because of the wet weather before shearing, were heavy in condition and showed discoloration or mud. The small offering of new season’s early-shorn lambs’ wool was short in staple.

Competition was animated and widespread, East and West Europe being the principal buyers. Strong competition came from New Zealand mills, and moderate buying from Japan.
