NEW YEAR CARNIVAL
Tyre-blowing contests
Five of the staunchest female tyre-blowers in Christchurch met at the New Brighton sound-shell yesterday afternoon to contest the first preliminary of the New Brighton New Year ’ carnival championship. With muscles flexing, Mrs D. Davies pumped a pressure of 101 b into a car tyre in 2min to win a place in the final, with Mrs D. Bolt, who pumped 7ilb. The men’s tyre-blowing was no deflation of excitement. A. Himiona pumped 121 b in the first heat then broke the handle of his brand-new pump. He was allowed another chance —and broke another handle. As a consolation, his name was added to the other two finalists, B. Ivanof (2211 b and A. Mockford (17}lb). Entries are still being accepted for the second preliminaries of the “Miss South Island” and “Mrs South Island” contests, both to be held today.
