Burning rag thrown
A burning, petrol-soaked rag wrapped round a stone was hurled on to the roof of the New Brighton soundshell during the “go-go” contest at the New Brighton New Y4ar carnival last evening—but it did not interrupt the performance. The burning rag did no damage to the sound-shell roof, and was removed by one of the organisers, who burnt his hands slightly in the process. There were about 1000 persons at the carnival when the incident took place, about 9.30 p.m. but few of them knew anything about it. Just before the carnival closed at 10 p.m., there was another incident when an argument broke out among a group of youths. It ended, after a brief exchange of punches, with one youth chasing another from the scene while waving a bottle.
