Fischer won't play in Russia

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright),

NEW YORK. America’s R. K. Fischer, who plays the Russian defender, B. Spassky, for the world chess championship in 1972, said yesterday that he would not play in Russia for fear of harassment and other unfair tactics.

The title match probably will be played in Amsterdam or in Jugoslavia. Fischer, who will be 29 in March, previously has accused the Russians of blocking him and other non-Russians from reaching a title challenge. "The Russians want to keep the world champion-

ship so badly they don’t care how they win,” said Fischer yesterday.

Asked to indicate how the Russians might harass him, Fischer said: “They might have a chambermaid barge into my hotel room and wake me up at 6 a.m., saying she wanted to collect my laundry.

“And there are lots of other things they can dolike bullying. They can promise me a certain kind of lighting, bur when I get there I don’t get it.” Fischer, whose major characteristic is self-confi-dence, won his chance to challenge Spassky by defeating the Russian, T. Petrosyan, in Buenos Aires.
