Women’s softball upset

Otago has become the most unpredictable team in the Bensel Cup section of the national women’s inter-provincial softball tournament being played | in Lower Hutt. : Otago upset all predictions i when it downed one of the I strong contenders for the ■ title, Hutt Valley, 4-2, on I Monday, but later was given a lesson in the fundamentals !of the game, when humbled by Wellington, 14-4. i Yesterday, Otago beat 'Hawke’s Bay, 9-8, but then

was trounced by Auckland, 14-4.

Wellington remain the only team unbeaten when it yesterday beat Bay of Plenty, 6-3, and Canterbury, 11-3. From five games, Wellington has amassed 52 runs and conceded 14.

Bay of Plenty has yet to win a game, going down to Hutt Valley and Wellington yesterday as has Waikato. Wellington did not look its best playing against Bay of Plenty, and was fortunate to score a couple of the runs it did. In section C, Otago had a narrow win when it beat Waikato, 21-20, in the last innings.

Wellington is the only unbeaten team in the section and Otago, Canterbury and Waikato each have had one loss iin the four games played. Results of yesterday’s games were:— Section A.—Auckland 14, Otago 4; Auckland 13, Waikato 1; Hutt Valley 15, Bay of Plenty 5; Hutt Valley 10, Canterbury 5; Otago 9, Hawke’s Bay 8; Wellington 6, Bay of Plenty 3; Wellington 11, Canterbury 3.
