PARUN IN FINAL

American opponent

(N.Z. Press Association)

TIMARU.

The New Zealand Davis Cup player, O. Parun (Wellington), looked set to take another title on the national tennis circuit when he won through to the final of the men’s singles of the South Canterbury championships yesterday. Parun had relatively easy wins in both quarter and semi-final matches, beating the former Canadian Davis Cup representative, R. Puddicombe, now of Wellington, 6-4, 6-4, after coming back from 1-4 down in the first set, and the American, S. Faulk, 6-2, 6-4.

His opponent for tomorrow, W. Brown, who was seeded only sixth for the tournament, had to struggle in both his matches, each of which went to three sets. He beat J. Fort (United States), who had put out the second seed, J. G. Simpson, in the second round, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Then, in a marathon, three-hour match against another countryman, A. Neely, he finally won 8-9, 9-7, 6-2. In the women’s singles, Miss B. Vercoe, of Auckland, scored a minor surprise by beating Miss M. Struthers (United States) to win her way through to the final. The other finalist is Miss R. Legge, of Canterbury, the No. 1 seed.
