9-WICKET VICTORY

Hawke Cup retained (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. Taranaki retained the Hawke Cup with surprising ease when it beat the challenger, Manawatu, by nine wickets on the second day of the match at Pukekura Park, yesterday. It was Taranaki’s second successful defence this season, and a personal triumph for the captain, D. R. Yardley, who took 10 wickets for 36 runs in the match. He had six wickets for 24 from 20 overs in Manawatu’s second innings, and his persistent, accurate mediumpaced bowling proved too much for the batsmen.

Taranaki’s next challenger, its sixth since winning the cup from Southland last year, is North Canterbury. This match is at Pukekura Park next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Scores: Taranaki 170 (R. Crow 47, R. West 33 not out; B. Harris 5/57) and 35/1, Manawatu 72 and 132 (G. Duncan 55; D. Yardley 6/24).
