Opossum unit

(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, Dec. 28. The New Zealand Forest Service and the Department of Agriculture will begin operations in selected areas in the Buller in January to establish an opossum-control unit, based on Westport, with an emphasis on any link with the incidence of bovine tuberculosis in dairy herds. The Department of Agriculture will also supply farmers with materials to destroy opossums. The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Carter) has advised the member of Parliament for Buller (Mr W. E. Rowling) that while a bounty on opossums in the district would provide a lucrative source of income to local residents, it would give little relief to the tuberculosis problem. A scheme run between 1950 and 1960. which cost the Government $2.5m, had not stopped the spread of opossums.
