In the year ended June 30, 1971, the number of sheep in New Zealand fell to 58,812,525 —a decrease of 1,363,586 on the previous year, the Government Statistician (Mr J. P. Lewin) said in a statement today. The North and South Island totals were 31,427,096 and 27,285,429 respectively, which showed a fall of 1,464,019 in the North Island and a rise of 100,433 in the South Island. Breeding ewes totalled 43,016,717, slightly higher than the previous year. A fall of 276,264 in the North Island was offset by a rise of 381,400 in the South Island. The number of ewe hoggets in both islands fell to the lowest total for some years at 10,342,689—a drop of 910,063.
