(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. The Hawke Cup holder, Taranaki, struggled to a narrow lead over Manawatu on the first day of a cup challenge match at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth yesterday. On a day when the batsmen of both sides were sorely troubled, Manawatu was dismissed for 72, and Taranaki at stumps was 107 for eight wickets. T. O’Byme and D. Yardley took four for 28 and four for 12 respectively for Taranaki, and the best bowler for Manawatu was B. Harris with four for 35.
