Reply-paid coupons

Sir,—A few days' ago, I called at a suburban post office and asked for a replypaid coupon to send to Australia. I was charged 18 cents. I mentioned that this was very high in price as the surface mail charge on a letter from Australia is much less than the amount requested. The young woman maintained that 18 cents was the correct charge. I realise that

we have to pay dearly for everything under a Tory Government but surely this is overdoing it.—Yours, etc., WORKER. December 17, 1971. [The Chief Postmaster (Mr M. T. Reedy) replies: “Before September 30,1971, Commonwealth reply coupons at a cost of 6c were acceptable in Australia for postage stamps or postal stationery. However, from October 1, 1971, these coupons were not acceptable in Australia and from that date persons wishing to provide for the payment of postage on a reply from Australia have been required to use an international reply coupon costing 18c. The writer was therefore given correct information at the suburban office”]
