CRICKET AWARDS

Cobb and Co. sponsorship The Cobb and Company cricket awards for the best batting and bowling performances will be judged during the 1971-72 Plunket Shield matches, which begin on December 26. The winner of each award will receive a cheque for $l5O. Sponsored by Cobb and Company (New Zealand), the awards were introduced last year. Last season’s winners, R. S. Cunis (bowling) and G. A. Newdick (batting), will again be eligible for this season’s contest. “The continuation of these awards after their success last year is most appreciated by cricket administrators,” said the chairman of the New Zealand Cricket Council’s board of control (Mr J. G. Leggat). "Awards such as these enhance interest in our first-class cricket, and I am sure the players will respond to the sponsor’s generosity.” Two batsmen and bowlers will be chosen each week after the judges have scored them from a maximum of five points. A progress points table will be compiled, and the batsman and bowler with the highest aggregate points will be declared award winners at the end of the Plunket Shield series.

Players will be judged on the spirit in which the game is played as well as the number of runs scored or wickets taken during a match.
