TASMAN SERIES
Allen will be racing
N. Allen, the Australian racing driver who won the last New Zealand Grand Prix at Pukekohe and retired from racing after the last Tasman series, has decided to come out of retirement and take part in the 1972 Tasman series in New Zealand and Australia. Allen, who is the head of a group of building companies in Sydney, and who, at the age of 30, is said to be a millionaire, will drive in the series for the American STP Corporation. He will drive one of the latest Formula A cars, a Lola T3OO.
Last season, Allen drove a McLaren MIOB Chevrolet, and, as well as his win at Pukekohe, he won at Teretonga and was placed at Levin. OTHER LOLAS
Allen’s entry in the T3OO Lola will intensify the Tasman competition. F. Gardner, an Australian, who won the European Formula A (Formula 5000) title, and the New Zealand driver, G. Lawrence, who was the 1970 Tasman champion, will drive similar cars.
Another driver taking part in the series will be D. Hobbs, an Englishman living in the United States, the winner of the 1971 American Formula A championship. The Tasman champion, the New Zealand driver, G. McRae, will drive a prototype Leda VB, and the leading driver, M. Hailwood, will have the latest Surtees TSII. The 1970 American Formula A champion, J. Cannon, will be back, as will the top American driver, R. Grable, and the winner of the recent Australian Grand Prix, F. Matich.
