Fire risk high
There was a very high fire risk in the Omihi and Balmoral forests, and if northwest winds occurred in the next few days the danger would be critical, the Conservator of Forests in Christchurch (Mr J. W. Levy) said yesterday. Mr Levy said there had been a lot of spring growth which was now drying out and providing a large amount of flammable material. Logging stopped in Balmoral forest at midday yesterday because of the risk that sparks from diesel machinery would cause a fire. It had not rained at Omihi for 44 days, and there had been no rain at Balmoral for 26 days, said Mr Levy. The fire risk at Eyrewell and Hanmer Springs was also high, and drying winds could quickly increase the risk to a dangerous level in these forests also.
