Decision for Mercedes
(N. 7.. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 13The Auckland Regional Authority confirmed tonight that, it would buy 150 Mer-cedes-Benz bus chassis. The cost with full duty is $5,254,750.
If the authority can get the foreign import duty rate of 45 per cent reduced to the British Commonwealth rate of 6) per cent it has been] estimated that it will save about slm. I'he Minister of Customs (Mr Adams-Schneider) has declined to allow the reduction on the ground that,' under the terms of the Customs Act, goods of a like; kind are available from a Commonwealth country. The authority is continuing discussions with the Minister in the hope of getting the import rate reduced. The decision of the authority to buy the German Mer-cedes-Benz bus was unani-' mous, although it was made in the face of desperate lastminute efforts by the British Leyland concern to have its tender favourably considered.
