Supreme Court CHARGES OF RAPE

Three men guilty After a retirement of 50 minutes, an all-male jury in the Supreme Court on Saturday afternoon found three young men guilty on charges of rape and attempted rape of a young woman on the bank of the Avon River by the Edmonds band rotunda, on September 26, after she had been to the Caledonian Dance Hall. Mr Justice Wilson remanded the three men, Ene Kapisi, aged 23, a welder (Mr G. R. Lascelles), Robert Kapisi, aged 21, a fitter (Mr M. J. Glue), and Timo Timo, aged 24, a metal polisher (Mr A. K. Grant), in custody to December 17 for sentence. A fourth man, Sagato Sio, aged 23, a workman (Mr J. E. Butler), was found not guilty on a charge of attempted rape, and was discharged. The jury retired at 4.50 p.m. and returned at 5.40 p.m. The trial began on Wednesday last. All the accused gave evidence, and witnesses as to character were also called by the defence.
