Firemen fight grass fires

A large number of firemen were kept busy for many hours from late Saturday night until late last night, fighting large fires in grass and plantations from Burwood to Godley Head.

Fire broke out in the plantation off Burwood Road about 11.30 p.m. on Saturday, burning pine needles and scrub under the trees but doing little serious damage. Two appliances from the New Brighton station, one from St Albans, and the Waimairi and Paparua counties’ water tenders fought this blaze for almost four hours until they returned about 3.25 a.m. yesterday.

Grass and scrub on some 600 acres at Godley Head blazed out of control for several hours last evening and continued to bum, occasionally flaring up, through the night. Firemen and appliances from the Lyttelton and Wool-

ston stations were called out to the fire about 6.15 p.m. and managed to surround it and bring it under some control by 9 p.m. The fire was in Livingstone Bay, and no residence or other property was in danger in the vicinity. However, the light southerly which came up late last night was causing fire authorities some concern, as it was feared the wind could fan the fire and spread it to the lighthouse or even Taylor’S Mistake.
