Hercules stranded
Eight Americans are still sheltering with a French scientific traverse party on
the Antarctic ice-cap, as bad weather continues to hinder attempts to rescue them and their damaged Hercules aircraft.
The aircraft suffered damage to it? propellers when two jet-assisted takeoff bottles broke loose from under one wing during takeoff on Saturday afternoon. Bad weather, which closed in soon after the mishap, had not improved yesterday. Radio contact is being made every four hours so that mechanics and parts may be flown in as soon as the weather clears.
The French party, for which the aircraft had brought fuel, is on a traverse from Carrefour to the Russian station at Vostok, and at present is about 100 miles south-west of Dumont D'Urville, the main French station.
