Student halls

Male and female students will share one of the three new halls of residence the University of Canterbury will open next year. This was announced yesterday by the Vice-Chancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips) at a meeting of the university council.

The three new halls, in Maidstone Road, will be known temporarily as North, South and West halls. They will provide 300 new residen-

tial places. With the opening of the first 63-bed stage of Rutherford Hall and a 63-bed extension to Rochester Hall, both on the same site in Ram Road, the university will have 426 new residential places available. Professor Phillips said that he expected all the available places to be taken. It had not been the experience of the university this year that halls were unpopular with students.
