Burwood teams share bowling honours

After being no better than level-pegging, and mostly well behind, for 20 of the 21 ends, Mrs J. Steele (Burwood) overhauled another Burwood skip, Mrs A. Forbes, and won the final of the Christchurch women’s Rose Bowl bowling tournament yesterday.

It was the first time in the 36 years the tournament has been played that two teams from the same club have contested the final. Mrs Steele’s team comprised Mesdames V. Ferguson (lead), J. Watson (second) and A. McDonald (third), and filling the corresponding positions for Mrs Forbes were Mesdames M. McFadzien, A. McFarlane and M. Wilson. On the opening ends Mrs Forbes’s .rink fared better and she looked well placed when a five on-the fifth took her to a 10-1 lead. But the position changed drastically on the next end when, after having only two bowls on the green at the changeover and electing to drive with her own two, Mrs Forbes went

down by eight. However, such a sizeable set-back was soon forgotten as Mrs Forbes, with Mrs McFadzien contributing greatly, won six of the next seven ends, to be 20-12. After 16 ends Mrs Forbes still looked set for victory with a 21-13 advantage, but then the complexion of the game suddenly changed. Mrs Forbes held at least tWo shots on the seventeenth end when the opposing No. 3, Mrs McDonald, followed the kitty into the ditch with a drive. Mrs Steele then played two superb shots to within two yards of the ditch to add to the count. On the eighteenth end, Mrs Steele, with her team playing with renewed confidence, scored a four and then tied the scores at 21-21 with a single. Mrs Forbes .edged

ahead again on the twentieth with a single after she, had been three down, and Mrs Wilson, who had been having weight troubles, played a magnificent shot to wrest out the shot bowl. On the last end, Mrs Steele’s team showed its worth under pressure by scoring a three and so take the game, 24-22. Mrs Steele owed much on these final tense ends to her lead, Mrs Ferguson, whose steadiness paved the way for her fightback. .Other results: Quarter-finals.—Mrs J. Steele (Burwood) 22, Mr* A. Beazley (Linwood) 17; Mr* A. Murphy (Shirley) 17. Mr* R. (Weill (Morrison Avenue) 13; Mrs E. Martin (St Albans) 2f, Mr* R. Laurenson (Ranglora) 16; Mrs A. Forbes (Burwood) 18, Mr* A MoLearey (Papanui) 10. . Semi-finals.—Mr* Steele 23, Mr* Murphy 6; Mr* Forbes 20, Mrs Marfin 16.
