Established miners lose gains
Leading mining stocks retreated on Australian stock exchanges yesterday and most of the recent gains were written off as sellers moved into the markets. Some industrials continued to gain and generally this sector was more stable, with B.H.P. flushing at one of its best points for some time. Oils were again narrowly mixed in dull trading.
C.R.A. and Consolidated Gold, each dropped 30c, while Peko dropped 16c to 614 c, and M.I.M. was 17c lower at 268 c. Poseidon, which opened strongly at 1300 c, fell to 1230 c, a net loss of 20c on the day. Bougainville, B.H. South, Great Boulder, Robe River and Western Mining were others to fall. C.S.R. led the' industrials with a 28c rise to 460 c, while B.H.P. rose another 15c at 1015 c. Comalco, however, was 20c down at 260 c.
The banks remained strong. Oil Search and N.S.W. Oil and Gas retreated further after the abandonment of their Mananda and Flying Fish wells. Woodside and Mid Eastern Oil dropped 3c and 4c each at 84c and 62c, despite Woodside’s optimistic appraisal of the north shelf prospects in the annual report.
