Medals for nurses

The largest class of community nurses to graduate from the Christchurch School of Nursing received medals at a graduation ceremony at Burwood Hospital yesterday.

It was also the first time there had been a 100 per cent pass in the class. The matron-in-chief of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Miss D. M. Newman), told the nurses that this was an important time for nursing in New Zealand. “You cannot escape some of the responsibility for the future of nursing education in New Zealand,” she said. Miss Newman advised the graduates to join the Nurses Association of New Zealand, as “it is the association that works for you.” The guest speaker, Dr L. C. L. Averill, the chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, stressed the need for continuing education for the nurse including in-service training.

“This is, of course, doubly necessary if you have been away from nursing for a period of time, because absence from nursing practice will reduce your efficiency and therefore may endanger a patient’s life who is relying on and trusting you.

Those who received medals from Mra Averill were:—
