Australian market firmer

Leading mining and industrial stocks moved ahead in brighter trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday; there was some evidence of a slight easing towards the close, but most issues finished higher on the day. Oils generally were narrowly mixed in quite trading.

B.H.P. recovered to the 1000 c mark in another strong performance. C.S.R. rose to about 445 c. E.Z. Industries was 10c higher at 235 c after the chairman’s prediction of higher profits for the current year at the annual meeting. Comalco, which announced aluminium production cuts, today, dropped 10c to 270 c, and A.N.Z. Bank, which reported lower profits, shed 4c 3t 526 c. Mining shares followed the recent upward trend again, and the leaders continued to trade confidently in the midst of buyers. C.R.A. increased to 550 c, M.I.M. 17c to 275 c, and Cons. Gold 60c to - 500 c. Poseidon changed hands at 1250 c. and W.M.C. was prominent with a 10c rise to 240 c. Uraniums were unimpressive as the leaders remain untraded, but a smallei uranium concern, Pan Continental, rose 2c to 90c. Peko-Wallsend continued its impressive recent gains with a 20c rise to 620 c. Bougainville jumped ahead 5c to 165 c. In the oil sector, Magellan stood out with a 10c rise to 85c. N.S.W.O.G. lost 8c to 8c after the announcement of the abandonment of the Flying Fish No. 1 well. SYDNEY
