Scots to celebrate 100 years of Rugby
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) EDINBURGH. Australia has accepted an invitation to nominate players for a President’s XV to play two matches in Edinburgh during the Scottish Rugby Union’s centenary celebrations in 1972-73, Associated Press reported.
France, South Africa and New Zealand have also been invited to nominate players for the side which will play against Scotland in the centenary match at Murrayfield on March 31, 1973. France has also already accepted the invitation but the other two unions are still considering it. The President’s side is expected to play a second match against a Scottish District XV.
The Scottish union also proposed a seven-a-slde tournament to take place at Murrayfield on April 7, 1973, organised on international lines. The exact format of the tournament has still to be settled, but England, Ireland, Wales and France, as well as Australia, have already accepted the invitation to participate;
The season will be inaugurated by a four countries match—Scotland and Ireland v. England and Wales—at Murrayfield on October 14, 1972.
New Zealand will be touring the British Isles and will play Scotland at Murrayfield on December 16.
The Scots’ home games in the international series that season will be against Wales and Ireland in February.
