CHARGES DROPPED
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW ORLEANS, Nov. 28. The state of Louisiana has withdrawn charges of bribery and gambling against the District Attorney. James Garrison.
Mr Ben Smith, a special prosecutor, said he would proceed with state charges of malfeasance (official misconduct) against Garrison, but would let the Department of Justice prosecute on bribery and gambling charges. Mr Smith lodged the malfeasance charge on Wednesday saying Garrison was trying to set up a “double jeopardy” situation to evade prosecution by the Federal Government.
Garrison went before his own county grand jury last week and asked it to indict him and nine other defendants on the same bribery and gambling counts with which the United States Government had charged him, and the grand jury complied. The Government charged Garrison on June 30 with taking bribes to protect illegal gambling in New Orleans.
