Spock chosen as candidate
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)
DALLAS, November 28.
The newly-created People’s Party has selected Dr Benjamin Spock as a Presidential candidate with the understanding that he will step down if a “bigger national figure” can be persuaded to take the party reins. Only 90 ■of the 200 delegates to the convention of various activist and peace groups voted for a Presidential nominee, with Dr Spock beating Mr Jack Hampton, aged 60, on the second ballot, by a vote of 47-43. The problem of inducing a nationally-known figure to accept the nomination of a coalition of groups ranging from Dr Spock’s new party to the Gay Liberation Front had been debated throughout the day.
