Precinct Society may help other areas
If the Merivale Precinct Society proved a successful venture, it would be only too willing to pass on its experience and knowledge to help any other area wishing to set up a similar society, said the chairman (Mr W. Clark) at a meeting this week. “In the meantime, however, the primary concern of the society is the preservation and harmonious development of the Merivale area,” Mr Clark said.
He was replying to a question from a member, Mr E. C. Price, about the possibility of the society creating a better image in the community by helping to organise allied societies, so that problems common to more than one area could be discussed.
Mr J. Oakley, chairman of the Christchurch Civic Trust, told the meeting that the Christchurch City Council had been approached on the matter of helping the society. The Mayor (Mr N. G. Pickering) had given his assurance that the council would be happy to consider problems raised by the society, and to co-operate with it. Mr N. Armstrong, a partner to Mr P. J. Bevan, an architect, said that he had approached the City Council’s parks and reserves department regarding further planting at the corner of Rossall Street and Leinster Road. As a result, five more trees were to be planted there in the autumn.
The meeting decided to approach the City Council regarding the improvement of
rubbish collection In the Merivale area. The constitution and rules of the society were discussed by Mr A. F. Shaw, a barrister and solicitor. Their adoption will be moved at the next general meeting.
