Boats seized by refugees

(N.Z. Pres, Assn.—Copyright) TAMPA, Nov. 26. A flight to freedom that involved the commandeering of boats of two countries, ended in Tampa, Florida, when 47 storm-battered Cuban refugees arrived aboard a 60ft trawler. The Cubans, 12 children, 13 women and 22 men, were escorted into the harbour aboard a lobster boat, Coral Rock 11, captained by a Hon. duran, Captain Horace Wood. Captain Wood said that the refugees were smuggled aboard the vessel and hidden below deck by three of their number who had taken jobs aboard his vessel in Honduras.

“I never saw them until I got to sea,” he said, referring to the refugees who took over his boat. He said that he found out about his unannounced passengers when the vessel ran into rough weather in the tropical storm Laura. From that point on, he said, “all we could do was fight and hope. You either live or go down.”
