OLYMPIC TRIAL
S.L pistol shooting
Canterbury’s leading pistol shot, J. Harper, will face a stern test from the three Heretaunga (Wellington) club members, B. McMillan, N. Hayes and J. Debney, when the South Island championships begin at the McLeans Island range today. Other Canterbury competitors expected to perform well are D. H. Stringer, in the rapid fire section, and R. Mapp, a promising free pistol exponent.
Harper has been practising hard this week and has registered some high totals. However, McMillan, as titleholder of both the national rapid fire and free pistol championships, will start a firm favourite. The shoot will be the first of three trials, the other two being the North Island and New Zealand championships. If individual performances are of a sufficiently high standard, there is a possibility of pistol shooting nominations being made for the Munich Olympic Games. The free pistol and air pistol sections will be held today and the rapid-fire contest on Sunday.
