GREEN'S POINT
No change of
name
The New Zealand Historic Places Trust has not at any time suggested a change in the name of the promontory at Green’s Point, Akaroa. This assurance to the residents of Akaroa was given by Mr G. M. Miller, chairman of the regional committee, in a statement.
Mr Miller said some concern had been expressed by Akaroa residents about information supplied by the trust on a question of considerable local interest. Early this year, the Akaroa County Council sought the advice of the regional committee concerning the correct name of the monument standing on Green’s Point.
“The advice given by the committee was that without doubt, the correct name was Britomart Memorial (or monument), and that it was so named in the report of the trust, recording the later plaque erected there in 1964, and in the official Gazette notice of 1956 proclaiming as a historic reserve the land on which the monument stands,” said Mr Miller.
“The wording on any notice directing the public to this monument is, of course, a matter for the local body concerned. The trust wishes to reassure the residents of Akaroa that it has at no time suggested a change in the name of the promontory at Green’s Point. In any case, the trust is not the authoritative body concerned with the names of geographical features.”
Green’s Point is named after William Green, who in November, 1839, was left in charge of about 40 cattle landed in Akaroa Harbour by William Barnard Rhodes from the barque Eleanor.
