School’s gift to museum fund

Boys of Standard 5B at the Cathedral Grammar School yesterday visited the director of the Canterbury Museum (Dr R. S. Duff) to hand over a cheque for $236 towards the museum’s hundredth anniversary building fund.

I The money represents half the proceeds from a bicycle trek from Church Comer to Leeston on September 19, when the 24 boys of the class raised $4OO of the school total of $472. The balance of the money raised will go to the Commonwealth Games appeal fund.

Because it raised so much of the money, Standard 5B was chosen to make the gift on behalf of the school. One of the boys, Guy Minty, presented the cheque to Dr Duff. Acknowledging the gift, Dr Duff said he thought it was the first fund-raising effort towards the museum building fund by any Christchurch school. In view of the fact that 45.000 school children visited the museum each year in organised classes, he hoped that next year, when the intensive phase of the appeal was underway, there would be many similar instances of school assistance, Dr Duff said.

After the presentation, the class was taken on a conducted tour of the museum by Dr Duff, and treated to refreshments in the garden court.
