Hostel for alcoholics
The Health Department has agreed to buy a property for a hostel for the rehabilitation of alcoholics in Christchurch. The hostel will be run and maintained by a joint trust of the Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian and Roman Catholic churches. Also represented on the trust will be the National Society of Alcoholism, the Health Department and the Canterbury Hospital Board. The Rev. G. F. McKenzie, the superintendent of the Presbyterian Social Services, said that the hostel would take about 12 men for a period of about three months, after they had completed their medical treatment The hostel would be selfgoverning and self-disciplin-ing. It will have a couple as resident wardens, and social workers and medical officers would visit. The main programme would be group therapy. The building would be as unobtrusive as possible, said Mr McKenzie. A new building or a signposted one would only make the hostel distinct from its environ-
ment and defeat the work of rehabilitation. The Health Department was not able yet to quote the amount it would be prepared to spend on the hostel, but it would not be bought until March next year. I
