Complaint of smoking
A Christchurch cardiologist and anti-smoking campaigner, Dr D. R. Hay, is upset because the Prime Minister (Sit Keith Holyoake) was seen smoking while addressing a number of primary school children at Parliament buildings.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Public Health Association, Dr Hay said he was concerned to see on television, a "certain right honourable gentleman” smoking while talking to a large group of school children.
“Admittedly he’s hooked,” Dr Hay said, “but with smoking the problem it is, this was no example for such a right honourable person to give to children.” Sir Keith Holyoake was shown on a “Gallery” programme about a fortnight ago, smoking while talking to a group of primary school children who wanted to change the name of New Zealand.
