Hotel hours

Sir,—As. a rail passenger travelling to Christchurch at night, I was taken aback to see a hotel in a country township still open at 10.45 p.m., with cars outside and youths coming from there with half gallons under their arms. Why is this allowed when the law is 10 p.m. closing? —Yours, etc., PASSENGER.

November 22, 1971. [Mr G. Tait, Chief Superintendent of Police, replies: “Hotels at this township are supervised both by the local constable and by non-com-missioned officers when possible. There are, within the Christchurch police district, 160 licensed premises, including chartered clubs, and a further 46 other types of licensed premises, giving a total of 206. Wherever possible, and time and staffing permit, police endeavour to pay frequent visits to licensed premises, but this is only a small portion of our over-all police duty, as your correspondent no doubt appreciates. It is ’ impossible to supervise every one of these licensed premises all the time. All reasonable and practical efforts are made, and will continue to be made, to ensure that the provisions of the Sale of Liquor Act, 1962, are complied with.”]
