THEOLOGY DEGREE
Ecumenical
course
(N.Z. Press Association)
DUNEDIN, Nov. 25. The provision of a bachelor of theology degree at the University of Otago would mean that a number of Roman Catholic and Protestant theology students would begin to study for a common degree next year, said the dean of the faculty of theology (Dr I. Breward). It would be the first undergraduate degree course in theology to be introduced in Australia or New Zealand, although there were similar degrees in some British universities, he said. Lecturers will be drawn from the staff of the theological hall at Knox College, Holy Cross Seminary, and the Glenleith Bible College, which is controlled by the Associated Churches of Christ.
Most of the professional training for the ministry and the priesthood, as well as the teaching of denominational doctrines, would continue to be the responsibility of individual churches whose students took the course, Dr Breward said. 1
