Tayler wins centennial 1500 metres at Timaru
Commonwealth Games representative, R. Tayler (Ariki, Dunedin), streaked to a commanding win in the 1500 metre feature event at the centennial meeting of the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club at the Caledonian Ground, Ti-
maru, on Saturday. Tayler ran the distance in a good early season time of 3min 49.45ec after easily disposing of the opposition.
Time along was not the measure of the quality of Tayler’s aggressive run. which had bumtoff all except T. Sutherland (Otago University) with threequarters of the distance gone. A. Gilmour (Technical) carried the six-man field through the first 400 metres in 61sec. Then Tayler took over the pacemaking ahead of Sutherland and Gilmour, with the international harrier, J. Sheddan (Olympic), beginning to wilt with the pace. Struggling further back were A. Baird (Mornington) and W. Wardell (Toe H). Tayler headed the field through the 800 metres in 2min 3sec and the 1200 metres in 3min 4sec. Already winner of the senior 800 metres, Sutherland spurted through but his glory was short lived as Tayler sprinted into the lead again down the back straight to win by 10 yards with Gilmour another 40 yards back third. The meeting provided many close finishes but probably none more so than that which concluded the meeting—the women’s high jump. The event developed into a marathon contest between two members of the Temuka Club, Misses F. Teahen and J. Dippie. The contest proper had ended in an outright tie even after applying the count back, both having cleared 4ft 7in and then missing 4ft Bin. The contest continued with the bar being moved up and down with the two girls failing and clearing the same heights in an effort to end the deadlock so that a winner could be found for the trophy—one of the many with which the meeting had been liberally endowed by sponsors. The contest ended with Miss Teahen, who had earlier figured prominently in the sprints, getting the decision when she cleared 4ft Bin—a height she had failed several times previously, while Miss Dippie missed again.
Sprints The short sprints provided excitingly close finishes in both the men’s and women’s sections, in an all High School Old Boys finish, T. Cochrane gained the senior men’s 100 metres in L 0.9 sec with G. Anderson and D. Berry both being credited with llsec for the next two placings. Anderson had his turn later when he took his section of the 200 mtres in 22.35ec, the best time for the distance. T Bailey made it a clean sweep of the shorter events for High School Old Boys by taking the 400 metres in 49.7 sec—one of the best times of the season.
Usually a competitor in the women’s under 17 grade, Miss L. Trimble (Toe H) had the best of the women’s sprint. In a fierce finish Miss Trimble just held off Miss Teahen, the Canterbury sprint champion to win the final of the 100 metres with both be-
ing credited with 12.6 sec. A commanding winner of her section of the 200 metres, Miss Trimble had the best time with 26.45ec, O.lsec better than the winner of the other section, Mrs A. Horsnell (Technical). Field events D. C. Leary (Toe H) had one of his most successful days, including a win over M. Stewart (Toe H) in the javelin. Winner of the javelin at Rugby Park two weeks ago with 210 ft 7in, Stewart was unable to match this form at Timaru, where his throwing elbow appeared to be troubling him. With a throw of 190 ft o«in, Leary won the match by nearly sft. For good measure Leary had the best jump in the pole vault and was then second in the discus to M. Mene (Technical).
Mene and K. Simpson (Toe H) had some intense competition in a busy afternoon with several events each. With a 2in margin in each case, Simpson had the better of Mene in both the long and high jumps, with the winning long jump of 22ft 2iin being one of the best this season The national representative, Miss B. Poulsen (Technical) topped off a useful range of allround performances, with a 48ft 2£in heave with the 81b I3oz shot, again one of the best of the seaCycle crash
A spectacular double crash in a half-mile cycling race brought the meeting to a temporary halt early in the afternoon. Near the top of the back straight, W. Taylor (Timaru) crashed to the ground. Although trying to take evasive action, a following rider, D. Sullivan (Timaru) crashed over the top of Taylor and was knocked unconscious after hurtling head first through the air. With a cut above the eye and other severe facial abrasions, Sullivan was taken to the Timaru Public Hospital for observation. Taylor was Treated at the hospital for a broken collar bone.
