Purdie big Waverley disappointment

“The Press” Special Service WANGANUI. The Blueskin II six-year-old Blue Suit came on powerfully from sixth on the home turn to record a good win over the top-weight, Black Charm, in the Waverley Cup yesterday.

The feature of the race was the eclipse of the very hot favourite, Purdie, which returned a most disappointing showing to finish tenth. The Waverley Cup was the

first leg of the T.A.B. concession double at the Waverley Racing Club’s spring meeting. Blue Suit is raced by Mr J. E. C. Varley and is trained for him by K. A. Thomson at Wanganui. Lately, he has managed a couple of fourth placings, and prior to his win yesterday had run fourth in an. intermediate mile event at Hastings. He was not strongly favoured in yesterday’s open handicap field, and started at 5-4 in Hie betting. The Hawera apprentice, J. Walker, let him settle down well back in the strung-out field. He was twelfth passing the half-mile, but soon afterwards began to work forward.

Once in to the straight he kept up a strong run, taking the lead at the furlong and fighting on strongly to win well.

A GOOD SECOND Black Charm took second, and was gallant in defeat. She also was well back early, but began a sharp forward move just after passing the half-mile. To make ground she was forced around the outside, and she covered a lot of extra ground. However, she kept up her run gamely and came on strongly down the outside.

Yogi Bear, last early, made a sharp run to be handy on the

home turn. He also was forced over extra ground. In the straight he battled on strongly to be a long neck from Black Charm in third place. Coolgardie, in the middle of the field going down the back, finished on for, fourth in front of Just Wishing, another to make ground. Then followed Walk Along, Frederik, Dallion, Emanuela, Purdie, Kabir, Tramore, and Viceroy. Purdie received a good run, being in fifth place-.all the way. When the pressure Went on turning for home he weakened, and his tenth placing was most disappointing. His rider, H. Rauhihi, had no excuses for the beaten favourite. He also was very disappointed in Purdie’s showing. However, Purdie will be going 10 l hi ?, engagement in the Wellington Handicap at Trentham on Saturday.
