SOUTHERN SALES
Horses for Melbourne “The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL. A visitor to Southland during the week was Mr Kevin Abrahams, of Melbourne, whose Meadowbrook Stud in Victoria is one of the largest in Australia. Mr Abrahams, who has been a leading Victorian owner for some years, made several purchases with a view to adding them to the brood mare strength of his stud. These included the unraced two-year-old, Bonnie Cross, a five-year-old mare in Assertive and the brood mares, Dundee
Sue and Hyreto. Bonnie Cross, which will race in Victoria later this season, is a filly by Armbro Del from the Bill B mare Bonnie Tartan, dam of one of Southland’s star pacers in Bobby Blue (2min 2 4-ssec), which is now in America.
Assertive is an unraced Hundred Proof mare from a top race mare in Super Royal, dam of the winners Roosevelt. Royalistic, Regal Royal, and Vice
Royal. Hyreto. a 15-y ear-old mare by Loreto from Bel win Lass, is the dam of Lumber, which took a New Zealand record of 2min 7 sec from a standing start, at two years. He later won the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Harold Park.
Dundee Sue is a six-year-old mare bv Nephew Hal from the Dillon Hall mare, Catamaran, and is a sister to an Australian winner in Hal Dundee. Catamaran is a sister of Cherry Blossom, the dam of Robin Dundee (Imin 59 sec) and Dundee (2min 2 l-ssec). Dundee Sue is due to foal to Tempest Hanover and is to remain in New Zealand to again be mated with the same horse. Another recent sale to Victoria was the Stormyway mare Watchout. Her first produce to race was the Honest Master filly, Demonstrator, which took a record of 2min Bsec last season at Invercargill.
