YACHTING FEDERATION Resistance to registration

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. The New Zealand Yachting Federation is to resist any Government intention to bring down compulsory registration for pleasure craft.

The executive council of the N.Z.Y.F., meeting in Auckland, resolved to inform the Minister of Marine that the federation would resist any control of pleasure boating.

"We are organising a lot of resistance in the Auckland association,” said the Auckland delegate, Mr H. Julian, in putting the motion. “There is no good in sitting back and letting them restrict one type of craft. Once it starts there is no ending. It has already happened overseas.” Mr H. England (Canterbury): “Registration will not stop loss of life. Substitute registration with boating education and then we wiU all get interested." DRAFT COPY A draft copy of safety regulations to establish uniform minimum equipment and accommodation for keel yachts when racing was tabled and adopted. The new rules, in four classes depending on the length and nature of the race,

(will come into force on July 1, 1972. Safety regulations now coming under the jurisdiction of the federation, honorary yacht inspectors and 1.0. R. measurers, formerly working through clubs, will in future work under the federation’s guidance. Keel yachts will be subject to a two-yearly inspection for safety.

Mr C. Wilson (Tauranga) said that safety rules for multi-hulls were under consideration.

“We don’t know a great deal about multi-hulls so I think we would be wise to get a set of rules from the International Yacht Racing Union and work from there,” said Mr Julian. TEAM MANAGER

Nominations for the manager to the Kiel Olympic yachting team will close on January 31, with the proviso that all nominees attend the trials to observe the respective competitors under pressure.

The chairman of the Olympic committee, Mr H. Wagstaff, said that the host nation, Germany, would provide the Finn class yachts for the Olympics. “It is proposed to import two sets of Finn spars and sails to be made available to the Finn representative and his tuning partner as soon as the Olympic selection is made,” said Mr Wagstaff. It was proposed to get the best overseas spars and sails for the other Olympic nominations.
