AMATEUR STATUS QUERIED

The fine dividing line between , professional and amateur status appears to depend on who pays the wages when it comes to teaching a sport. A meeting of the Auckland Swimming Centre’s management committee heard a ruling on whether a physical education student could be paid to teach swimming for a two-week period during the holidays and still be eligible to compete. “I do not regard this as professional coaching but rather an extension of, and an oppountity to apply my training in a practical situation before I begin teaching next year,” the inquirer said. “The acceptance of a professional teach-to-swim job constitutes a surrender of amateur status. The rule is explicit,” said the secretary, Mr R. X Dyer. Receiving wages for teaching swimming in the vocation of a physical educationist does not carry any disqualification, but to receive money direct from pupils or to teach swimming and be paid by a non-educational institute would end a competitor’s amateur status.
