Floods in Spain
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BARCELONA (Spain), Sept 22. Dozens of towns and villages throughout the rugged north-east Catalonia region of Spain were isolated today and vast areas around Barcelona were inundated after floods and lightning that killed at least 11 people within 25 hours. The floods were touched off by torrential rainstorms that started early on Monday. During the night fresh storms swelled already raging rivers, and heavy lightning added to the peril.
One man was struck down and killed by a bolt of lightning in the yard of his home at Figueras in northern-most Gerona Province. Most of the other victims were swept away by turbulent waters or buried in the rubble of collapsing buildings. Among the dead'were two young children swept away in the angry Llobregat River near the village of Olesa, north-west of Barcelona. About 200 children between the ages of four and six were evacuated from a nursery school at Sabadell, 12 miles north of here, only moments before swirling waters engulfed the building.
