Boulders slow work
Huge boulders in the Clarence river-bed have slowed progress towards completion of a-1000ft bridge across the river. The contractor, Wadey and Efford, Ltd, of Rangiora, is behind schedule in sinking the foundtions for the bridge, which Involves driving large cylinders 40ft into the ground and pouring concrete into them. A spokesman for the Ministry of Works said that the contract price for the foundations alone was $274,000. since the contractor started work a contract for the piers to stand on the foundation caps had been added. The second contract was worth $58,000. The spokesman said that the ministry was anxious to get the work finished because of the trouble the river had caused in the past. The ministry had the fullest confidence in the contractor, which had Successfully completed several other bridging contracts in Canterbury and Westland.
Law students’ moob—Mr T. M. Abbott won the University of Canterbury Law Students’ Society’s annual senior moot before Sir Francis Adams and Mr Justice Wilson in the Supreme Court. The topic was “Herrington v. The British Railways Board.” The judges commented that it was one of the best moots they had heard.
