City official imprisoned
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copvrlßht) NEW YORK, Sept. 17. A former New York City senior official has been imprisoned for from one to four years after his conviction, last June, on corruption charges involving demands for $U5230,600 for favourable action on mortgage loan requests. Eugene Sugarman, aged 55, a lawyer and former deputy in the city comptroller’s office, was found guilty of 11 counts of conspiracy, taking unlawful fees, and receiving bribes. The assistant district attorney, Mr Samuel Yasgur told the Supreme Court: “Sugarman practised grand-scale corruption at the highest echelon, and showed no willingness to disclose the whole truth about his activities.” Sugarman handled hun- ; dreds of millions of dollars Üblic employee pension and demanded payi mehts from corporations i which wanted mortgages.
