OBITUARY

H. J. Powell "The Press’* Special Service DUNEDIN. Herbert James (Bert) Powell, who died at Dunedin yesterday, was one of Wingatui’s best known and respected trainers. He was 55 and had been in ill health for some time. He was apprenticed to the late Mr A. H. McDonald and he soon made his mark as a Jockey on the flat and over fences. He was wounded while on active service overseas but on his return to New Zealand resumed his profession in racing. He was attached to the estab* lishment of the late D. P. Wilson when the Mosgiel Park stable was earning recognition as one of the top stables in New Zealand and he also rode for his brother-in-law, H. A. Anderton. Mr Powell earned a high reputation for breaking and educating young and unruly horses. In 1944, after returning wounded from war service, he formed a training partnership with J. A. Wilson with training quarters at Levin. The partnership was dissolved when Mr Wilson entered the hotel trade at Timaru and Mr Powell returned to Wingatui, where he set up as a nubile trainer. Eleven years ago the partnership of Powell and Wilson again came into force and the success of the stable reached its peak when the $lOOO Trentham purchase, Susan Jane, was developed into a $lOO,OOO American purchase.
