N.Z. daffodil show
(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Sep. 17. R. C. A. Tombleson (Gisborne) won the Walker and Holl Trophy for the champion bloom in the Daffodil Society of Now Zealand's 1971 show, which opened at New Plv> mouth yesterday. Ho also won the Open Championship Cup, for throe blooms of each of IS varieties, for the 10th successive year. The show was held in conjunction with the West Coast (North Island) camellia show and the New Plymouth Horticultural Society’s spring show. Daffodil entries were of a very good standard, said the. Daffodil Society’s secretary (Mr F. W. Taylor). Colours were very ‘ * rich this year, probably a seasonal effect, and the flowers were a credit to the growers. Blooms had come from as far as Auckland, Gisborne, and Christchurch. The secretary of the Camellia Society (Miss I. M. Corbett) said that the 500 blooms on display were not as many as those exhibited at Hawera last year. Judges for the show were: i Daffodils, open collections: Mr !J. H. Davenport (Geraldine). {Single blooms: Mr J. S. Stalker (Petone). Amateur section: Miss M. M. Verry (Te Kuiti). Camellias: Mr and Mrs R. H. Clere (Taupo) and Mr and Mrs D. O’Toole (Whakatane), who judged in pairs. Mr Tombleson also won several other trophies, including the Rhodes silver cud for New Zea-land-raised daffodils. Among South Island exhibitors, D. H. Butcher (Christchurch) ! won Ut>e Tombleson trophy for triandus and cydamineus and the R. Hyde trophy for pinks.
