SMALL UNIONS
; Combination j advocated (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 9. A call for the amalgamation of smaller trade unions I was made in Auckland ■by the Leader of the OpposiItion (Mr Kirk). | Small unions could not ■support themselves ade- ■ quately to allow the interests ’of their members to be safeguarded, he told the biennial conference of the Auckland Engineers’ Union. Of 350 unions in the country, 12} per cent had insufficient numbers to allow a financially viable organisation. Union membership could be made more attractive, if legislation did not prevent it, Mr Kirk said. "Unions should supply social and welfare benefits and research facilities. They should be able to have financial arrangements for members. Why shouldn’t a union establish holiday accommodation for members, or even form a travel club? This should be part of a union’s activities.” No bid for land.—A 64.8 perch block of land situated at 300-304 Armagh Street failed to attract a bidder when it was offered at auction by Sherris and Wilson, Ltd, yesterday. The property has a Government valuation of $13,400. The auctioneer was Mr C. M. Robertson.
