N.Z. PAPERS ON ENVIRONMENT

New Zealand will contribute three papers to the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment to be held in Stockholm next year.

The papers will be from the Department of Health on monitoring radio-active pollution, the Forest Service on the introduction of game animals and their effect on natural vegetation, and two by the Department of Scientific

and Industrial Research. One of these papers will be on the soil factor in global planning of environmental control, and the other on the treatment of meatworks effluent by ion exchange. Regional seminars • are being held before the Stockholm conference. The object of the seminars is to ensure participation in the preparatory work for the conference by' the less-industrialised -countries and to see that their points of view and problems are considered.

The chief executive officer of the New Zealand Environmental Council, Mr C. K. McMahon, was in Bangkok last week to attend two seminars, the first which was run jointly by E.C.A.F.E. and the secretariat for the United Nations Conference. He was elected chairman of an E.C.A.F.E. seminar on ecological implications of rural and urban population growth.

Similar seminars to the one in Bangkok are being held in Addis Ababa, Mexico; City and Beirut.
